Method Man Explains Why He Rejected Drake’s “Wu-Tang Forever” Remix

Method Man has opened up about why he turned down Drake’s proposed “Wu-Tang Forever” remix, admitting he did not connect with the song and questioning why it carried the name of the iconic Wu-Tang Clan album.

Appearing on the 7PM In Brooklyn podcast with Carmelo Anthony and Kazeem Famuyide, Method Man, also known as Johnny Blaze, revisited the 2013 project in which Drake attempted to assemble the entire Wu-Tang Clan for a posse cut.

“I like Drake. I think he’s a dope artist, he puts out some great music obviously — otherwise he wouldn’t be as big as he is,” Meth said. “But when he sent the record, we were overseas. And you know, some brothers were trying to write to it. And I’m sitting there like, ‘I don’t like it.’ I was like, ‘What does this have to do with Wu-Tang Forever?’ I’m not questioning his artistic ability or anything. I’m just saying, from my [perspective], it was more or less like, ‘I’m not getting on that.’”

The story echoes U-God’s earlier comments in a 2014 MTV News interview, where he explained that a difference in lyrical focus prevented the remix from materializing. U-God noted that Drake wanted lyrics about women, while the Clan was focused on harder, street-oriented content.

“I guess we kinda came too hard for him. He wanted us to talk about broads but at the time we weren’t in no broad mode. We were hard-body at the time,” U-God said. “I think later on I said to myself, ‘What the hell was I rhyming about?!’ We got the track last minute. We only had about six hours to write this thing … He was talking about something totally different so the subject matter didn’t really mesh.”

Inspectah Deck also addressed the remix in a 2015 Vlad TV interview, arguing that Drake’s track did not represent the Clan’s original work. He pointed out that “Wu-Tang Forever” sampled “It’s Yours” by T La Rock & Jazzy Jay, rather than Wu-Tang Clan’s “It’s Yourz,” which formed the foundation of their album track.

“Having that sample in there didn’t make it, ‘Okay, it’s officially Wu-Tang’ to me,” Deck said. “It don’t represent what we were saying with ‘It’s Yourz’ so I didn’t understand how this was a dedication to Wu-Tang.”

The explanations from Method Man, U-God, and Inspectah Deck shed light on why the remix never came together, highlighting creative differences and the importance of maintaining the Clan’s original message and style.
