Tory Lanez Conviction Upheld After Appeal Denial

Tory Lanez, the Canadian rapper serving a 10-year prison sentence for shooting Megan Thee Stallion, has lost his appeal. On November 12, the appellate court rejected his claims, affirming both his conviction and sentence.
In a 46-page ruling, judges stated that the trial testimony “was more than sufficient to support the jury’s finding that [Tory Lanez] personally inflicted great bodily injury on [Megan Thee Stallion].” The court found no errors in how the trial was conducted or in the jury’s instructions.
Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, argued in his appeal that evidence had been improperly admitted, prosecutors engaged in misconduct during the 2022 trial, and the jury had been improperly instructed. He also contended that the court should have given him the low term of his sentence instead of the middle term.
Tory Lanez was convicted of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, possessing a loaded unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
The incident occurred in July 2020 during a party at Kylie Jenner’s Hollywood Hills home. Megan Thee Stallion said she and Lanez were arguing in the street when he told her to “dance, bitch” before firing a weapon, injuring her feet. She also claimed that Lanez offered her $1 million to keep silent about the shooting.
Earlier in 2025, Megan Thee Stallion was granted a five-year restraining order against Lanez. She alleged he had been harassing her online from prison through intermediaries.
The appeal’s rejection reinforces the original ruling, and Lanez will continue serving his 10-year sentence. The case remains one of the most high-profile incidents in recent hip-hop history, highlighting issues of accountability and violence within the music industry.
