Megan Thee Stallion Breaks Hip-Hop’s Billboard Slump With “Lover Girl”

Hip-hop has faced a noticeable lull on the charts, with last week marking a rare absence of rap songs in the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. The highest-charting rap track was NBA YoungBoy’s “Shot Callin” at No. 44, followed by Cardi B’s “Safe” featuring Kehlani at No. 48 and BigXthaPlug’s “Hell at Night” featuring Ella Langley at No. 49. This marked the first time since February 1990 that hip-hop completely fell out of the top 40, when Biz Markie’s “Just a Friend” was the highest-ranked track.

The slump raised concerns about the genre’s mainstream dominance, but Megan Thee Stallion has quickly changed the narrative. The Texas rapper released her new single, “Lover Girl,” late last month. The track celebrates her relationship with Dallas Mavericks star Klay Thompson, which she publicly confirmed earlier this year.

On “Lover Girl,” Megan raps about the balance and respect in her relationship: “Your na fantasy, my man reality / I had to lock in when I found out he could handle me,” and, “Some nas call me extra, my n*a call me pressure / This st be easy when you find somebody on your level.” The lyrics highlight admiration and mutual support, with lines like, “He know he a star, but he my biggest fan.”

The single resonated quickly with fans, and according to Chart Data on X, it has reached No. 38 on the Billboard Hot 100, officially returning hip-hop to the top 40. Megan’s success underscores her influence in the genre and demonstrates the ongoing appetite for female-led rap tracks in mainstream music.

With “Lover Girl,” Megan Thee Stallion not only ended a rare chart drought for hip-hop but also reinforced her position as one of the genre’s most impactful artists. Fans can expect her continued presence on the charts as she builds momentum for future releases.
