Joey Bada$$ and Capital STEEZ Reunite on Unreleased Track Shared by Nyck Caution

Joey Bada$$ and the late Capital STEEZ have been reunited on wax, thanks to a newly unearthed collaboration shared by fellow Pro Era member Nyck Caution. The song, recorded over a decade ago, offers fans a bittersweet glimpse into the chemistry the two rappers shared before STEEZ’s tragic passing in 2012.
Nyck Caution Uncovers Lost Pro Era Gem
On Monday (March 3), Caution took to Instagram to share a snippet of the track, listed as “gwood.” The song features him, Joey Bada$$, and Capital STEEZ trading bars, capturing the raw energy of Pro Era’s early days.
“Was going through old music remembering Disguise the Limit and found this old gem circa 2010 with Joey and Steez lmao wanted y’all to peep,” Caution wrote in the caption.
For longtime fans of the collective, the discovery of this track is a rare and emotional moment, as STEEZ’s musical legacy has largely remained frozen in time since his passing.
Joey Bada$$ and His Survivor’s Guilt
Joey Bada$$ has long spoken about the pain of losing his close friend and collaborator. On his 2022 song “Survivor’s Guilt,” he opened up about the deep sense of responsibility he still carries.
“STEEZY told me get ’em so I got ’em / Now my n***a gone, he will never be forgotten / Ever since he left I’ve just been struggling without him,” he rapped, reflecting on how their careers took different trajectories before STEEZ’s untimely death.
Joey also addressed the controversy surrounding Pro Era’s STEEZ DAY festival, an event created to honor the late rapper and support his family. In 2018, STEEZ’s relatives boycotted the festival and criticized Joey, claiming he had not done enough for them. On “Survivor’s Guilt,” he responded:
“And here’s a message to his fam / I know y’all got emotional trauma, that I understand / But I couldn’t f*** with y’all trying to tell the world I wasn’t who I am / When all I ever tried to do was lend a hand.”
The Tragic Passing of Capital STEEZ
Capital STEEZ, born Jamal Dewar, was a founding member of Pro Era and widely considered one of the most promising young lyricists of his time. However, he struggled with mental health issues, and on December 23, 2012, he died by suicide at the age of 19.
Shortly before his passing, STEEZ tweeted “The end” and reportedly sent farewell messages to close friends. He jumped from the rooftop of Cinematic Music Group’s headquarters in Manhattan, dying on impact. His death left a lasting void in the rap community, with Joey and the rest of Pro Era continuing to keep his legacy alive.
Keeping STEEZ’s Legacy Alive
While fans have long wished for more of STEEZ’s unreleased music to see the light of day, there has been little movement on posthumous releases. His long-rumored album King Capital remains shelved, though snippets and leaks occasionally surface.
With this latest unearthed track, Nyck Caution has given Pro Era supporters another glimpse into the brilliance of Capital STEEZ. Whether more lost songs will emerge remains unknown, but for now, fans can appreciate this rare moment of Joey and STEEZ once again sharing the mic.
