Janelle Monáe Takes Aim at Nelly Over Trump Inauguration Performance at Grammy Afterparty

Janelle Monáe made headlines at Anderson .Paak’s Grammy Awards afterparty with a freestyle addressing Nelly’s controversial decision to perform at Donald Trump’s recent inauguration. Captured in a video obtained by TMZ, Monáe took the mic during the lively celebration as a live band played popular hits, including Nelly’s “Hot In Herre.” When the track began, Monáe unleashed a scathing freestyle aimed at the St. Louis rapper.

“I used to like Nelly, but then he went to perform for Donald Trump/Fuck that n-gga, don’t give a fuck,” she rapped. “I care about women, I care about Hispanics, I care about Spanish people/I care about Black people, I care about gay people. Fuck you, Nelly, you sold out. I used to think he was cool, but now you look like a muthafuckin fool.”

The Grammy-winning singer and actress continued, making it clear that her words were fueled by her values and principles. “I might be a little tipsy but I know everything that I’m saying!” she declared, drawing cheers from the crowd.

Nelly’s performance at Trump’s Inaugural Liberty Ball on January 20 sparked backlash, with many fans questioning his decision. Speaking to Geto Boys legend Willie D before the event, Nelly defended his choice, stating it was an “honor” to perform for the office of the president, regardless of who occupies it.

“He’s the president — he won! This isn’t a campaign, this isn’t the RNC. I’m not doing this for money,” Nelly said, emphasizing that his motivations were about respecting the office. He also addressed the criticism head-on, saying, “I apologize that I quote-unquote let you down. But I thought you were riding with me for the scholarships I’ve given, the kids I’ve helped, the lives we’ve saved—not because of who I would or wouldn’t perform for.”

Nelly also defended Trump against accusations of being a white supremacist, though his responses, including referencing Trump’s housing discrimination cases and controversial political moves, left many unconvinced.

Monáe’s freestyle adds her voice to a growing list of entertainers openly criticizing artists who choose to align themselves with Trump. While Nelly maintained that his performance was not an endorsement of Trump’s policies, the backlash underscores the deep divisions within the entertainment community over political choices.

As Monáe’s impassioned words continue to circulate online, they serve as a reminder of her commitment to advocacy and her willingness to challenge others in the industry on issues of social and political significance. Whether through music, film, or a late-night freestyle, Monáe remains unapologetically vocal about her beliefs.
