Jay-Z Ranks 25th on Billboard’s Top Songwriters of the Last 25 Years

Billboard has released the first names on its ranking of the top songwriters of the 21st century, placing Jay-Z at number 25. The list evaluates writers based on the number of Hot 100 chart-toppers from January 1, 2000, to December 28, 2024. Kanye West, Sean Garrett, Fergie, and Jermaine Dupri occupy the next four spots after Jay-Z. Billboard will continue unveiling the remaining names throughout the week.

The ranking criteria focused on each writer’s number of No. 1 hits. Billboard explained that every songwriter on the list achieved at least six Hot 100 number ones during the first quarter of the century. The top eight songwriters reached double-digit No. 1 totals, highlighting consistent influence on mainstream music.

Jay-Z has six Hot 100 number ones as a writer. Among these, Beyoncé’s “Baby Boy” featuring Sean Paul stands out, spending nine weeks at number one. The list underlines Jay-Z’s role as both a performer and a songwriter, with significant contributions to other artists’ careers over the past two decades.

Fans have reacted with mixed opinions on social media. Some argue Jay-Z should rank higher due to his impact on other artists like Rihanna. Others highlighted his consistent influence over 20-plus years as a major factor in shaping popular music.

The announcement comes shortly after Jay-Z and Beyoncé made headlines for attending Kris Jenner’s 70th birthday celebration. The couple reportedly entered the Beverly Hills party at Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez’s residence without paparazzi capturing their arrival. High-profile attendees included Chris Rock, Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry, Mariah Carey, Mark Zuckerberg, Paris Hilton, and Jenner’s six children. Billboard’s songwriter ranking reinforces Jay-Z’s enduring presence in the music industry, showing that even after decades of success, his influence continues to resonate on the charts and beyond.
