Ghetts Sentenced to 12 Years for Fatal London Hit-and-Run

Ghetts has been sentenced to 12 years in prison following a fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of 20-year-old Yubin Tamang in London last year. Ghetts previously pleaded guilty to the charges in December, admitting that he was driving just under 70 miles per hour in a 30 miles per hour zone when his BMW M5 struck Tamang. He failed to stop at the scene and did not alert emergency services. Two days later, Tamang succumbed to his injuries in a nearby hospital, leaving friends and family devastated. The case has drawn significant attention due to Ghetts’ high profile and the severity of the incident.

During the sentencing hearing, Tamang’s mother, Sharmila Tamang, addressed the court with an emotional statement. She described how her only child had come to the UK to pursue studies, only to lose his life due to the reckless actions of another. “Yubin was our only child… on his way back from his work this happened and he lost his life,” she said through tears, highlighting the profound impact of the tragedy on their family. Tamang’s roommate, Sushant Khadka, also contributed a statement emphasizing Yubin’s ambitions, noting that he had dreams and plans for the future that were cut short. These statements illustrated the personal human cost of the incident, emphasizing the gravity of Ghetts’ actions.

In his own written statement, Ghetts expressed remorse and acknowledged the suffering he caused. He stated, “This young man and his family are in my thoughts daily. I cannot express the enormous feeling of guilt and shame I feel for the suffering I have caused.” While his remorse was noted by the court, it did not mitigate the seriousness of the offenses, which included multiple traffic violations, dangerous driving, and an alleged alcohol violation. The court highlighted the reckless nature of Ghetts’ driving, which involved failing to stop at six red lights, swerving into the wrong side of the road, and colliding with other vehicles before hitting Tamang.

Judge Mark Lucraft KC, who handed down the sentence, described the CCTV footage of the incident as a “quite appalling litany of incidents” and “simply shocking.” The ruling included a 17-year driving ban in addition to the 12-year prison sentence. The combination of the prison term and extended driving ban reflects the court’s stance on the extreme danger posed by the offenses. The judgment also serves as a warning regarding the severe legal consequences of reckless driving and driving under the influence, particularly when it results in loss of life.

The case has reverberated through the music and wider communities, given Ghetts’ prominence as a MOBO Award-winning rapper. His sentencing brings closure to Tamang’s family while underscoring the tragic consequences of reckless behavior on public roads. The story also serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with operating a vehicle and the importance of accountability. Ghetts’ prison term marks a turning point, and the long-term impact of the incident will remain a sobering example for both the public and the music industry. The sentence affirms the legal system’s commitment to justice for victims of fatal road incidents.
