Drake Plans to Appeal Dismissed Defamation Lawsuit Against UMG

Drake is not walking away from his legal battle just yet. After a judge dismissed his defamation lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG), the rapper’s spokesperson confirmed that he plans to appeal the decision.

“We intend to appeal today’s ruling, and we look forward to the Court of Appeals reviewing it,” the statement read. The response shows that Drake is prepared to continue fighting despite the court’s rejection of his claims.

Drake filed the original lawsuit in January, accusing UMG of allegedly manipulating the success of Kendrick Lamar’s viral diss track “Not Like Us” and promoting what he described as a “false and malicious narrative.” He claimed that the company’s actions damaged his reputation and portrayed him as a predator in the aftermath of his public feud with Lamar.

The court, however, sided with UMG. The judge ruled that the lyrics at the center of the complaint were protected as “nonactionable opinion” and therefore could not be considered defamation. UMG’s motion to dismiss was granted in full.

In the ruling, the judge wrote, “The artists’ seven-track rap battle was a ‘war of words’ that was the subject of substantial media scrutiny and online discourse. Although the accusation that plaintiff is a pedophile is certainly a serious one, the broader context of a heated rap battle, with incendiary language and offensive accusations hurled by both participants, would not incline the reasonable listener to believe that ‘Not Like Us’ imparts verifiable facts about plaintiff.”

Drake’s legal team now hopes to convince the Court of Appeals that the dismissal was premature and that UMG’s role in amplifying the song’s reach warrants further examination. Legal experts note that overturning a defamation dismissal can be difficult, but not impossible if new arguments or evidence are presented.

Reactions among fans have been divided. Some have mocked Drake’s loss, suggesting he should focus on his music instead of legal disputes. Others have defended him, arguing that he has a right to protect his name and that the appeal could set an important precedent for how record labels engage in artist rivalries.

Drake has not publicly commented on the dismissal or the upcoming appeal. However, the decision to challenge the ruling signals that he is not ready to move on from one of the most publicized disputes in recent hip-hop history.

The case remains a focal point in the ongoing tension between Drake and Kendrick Lamar, whose feud has reshaped much of the 2024 rap landscape. With an appeal now in motion, the legal and cultural fallout from “Not Like Us” is far from over.
