Black Thought Promises Epic Solo Effort with Streams of Thought Vol. 4

Black Thought is gearing up to release Streams of Thought Vol. 4, a project he calls his “opus.” In a conversation with Redman for Rolling Stone’s “Musicians On Musicians” series, the legendary Roots lyricist highlighted the ambition behind the album, teasing elaborate beats, intricate samples, and high-profile features.
The album marks a continuation of Black Thought’s solo series, which began in 2018. Streams of Thought Vol. 3 arrived in 2020, and fans have been waiting since. Black Thought explained the delay, citing the complexity of sample clearance as a major factor.
“I feel like it’s my opus. It has the most features, the most elaborate beats, crazy samples,” he said.
The Philadelphia native has hinted at a mix of established and contemporary collaborators. Confirmed features include Pharoahe Monch, Yasiin Bey, Redman, Fabolous, Tobe Nwigwe, Big K.R.I.T., Curren$y, Rick Ross, and JID. Black Thought emphasized that each guest had to hold their own and fit seamlessly into the project.
“Everyone ain’t gonna get an opportunity to jump on a joint with me. You have to be able to hold your own. Streams of Thought Vol. 4 is only 30 minutes, but it’s crazy,” he said in a 2020 interview with LEVEL.
A standout collaboration is with Yasiin Bey, a longtime partner on tracks including The Roots’ “Double Trouble” and “Rising Down” and Black Star projects. Black Thought described their lead track, “Blaaaaack!,” as a “timeless classic” with lasting impact.
Unlike the first three volumes, which featured production from 9th Wonder, Salaam Remi, and Sean C, Streams of Thought Vol. 4 is entirely produced by 14KT. The Detroit-born producer has worked with Jay Electronica, Skyzoo, and Elzhi, bringing a fresh sonic approach to Black Thought’s complex lyricism.
Fans can expect an intense, concise project that balances lyrical mastery with diverse collaborations. Black Thought’s careful curation of features, samples, and beats positions Streams of Thought Vol. 4 as a landmark release in his solo discography.
This album promises to reaffirm Black Thought’s status as one of hip-hop’s most skilled and thoughtful lyricists, while offering new dimensions of sound and storytelling.
