Birdman Plans Cash Money Records Documentary with DJ Akademiks

Birdman revealed plans to film a documentary about Cash Money Records, but he wants to do it only with DJ Akademiks. The idea came up during a recent live stream conversation between the two, clips of which have been widely shared on social media.
DJ Akademiks emphasized the need for a full documentary, not just a sit-down interview. Birdman agreed, saying, “I want you to capture a moment. We can do it like a documentary. I don’t want to do the normal interview sh*t. That’s a good idea. It’s way bigger than that… I can’t do it with nobody but you Ak.”
The announcement sparked mixed reactions online. Some fans criticized Akademiks’ involvement. One Instagram user wrote, “Since he doesn’t know how far back Birdman been effing over artists before making it nationally, he fits what Birdman wants to be portrayed.” Another suggested, “Cash Money should do a documentary but find someone other than Akademiks.”
Birdman co-founded Cash Money Records in 1991 with his brother Ronald “Slim” Williams. The label gained prominence signing artists such as Lil Wayne, Juvenile, B.G., and the Hot Boys. In the late 2000s, Cash Money’s success grew with artists like Drake and Nicki Minaj.
Birdman recently made headlines claiming Cash Money invested over $2 billion into Drake, Lil Wayne, and Nicki Minaj’s careers. In an interview on Cannon’s Class with Nick Cannon, he said, “Two billion dollars between Drake, Nicki, and Wayne. Two plus billion dollars. Hundreds of millions of dollars, guaranteed.”
Earlier this year, Birdman reunited with the Hot Boys for a tour. The group had first performed together again at Lil Weezyana Fest in New Orleans in November 2024.
The planned documentary could provide fans a deep look into Cash Money’s history and Birdman’s role in shaping modern hip-hop. Whether Akademiks will be the right fit remains a point of debate among fans.
