Nipsey Hussle Honored on What Would Have Been His 40th Birthday

Nipsey Hussle would have turned 40 on Friday, August 15, but his life was tragically cut short. Fans and the city of Los Angeles continue to celebrate his legacy and contributions to music and community.

As part of the tribute, the Los Angeles Metro system announced it will temporarily rename the Hyde Park Metro station at Crenshaw and Slauson to the Nipsey Hussle station from August 15 through August 31. Additionally, Metro will release two limited-edition TAP cards featuring the late rapper. One card showcases an iconic photograph by Jonathan Mannion of Nipsey at the Hyde Park intersection, while the other depicts him sitting in the back of a Metro bus.

A total of 12,000 cards will be available at select stations, including Hyde Park, Crenshaw, Slauson, Compton, Hollywood/Vine, and Expo/Crenshaw, as well as at Metro Customer Centers. New participants in Metro’s LIFE Program in South Los Angeles will also receive one of the special cards. The initiative is part of the Metro x Culture campaign, which collaborates with local artists, musicians, community leaders, and influential brands to connect the transit agency with Los Angeles’ cultural landscape.

Tributes to Nipsey Hussle extend beyond official initiatives. Lil Wayne recently referenced Hussle on his album Tha Carter VI, including a line about loving Hussle’s son as his own. Hussle’s partner, Lauren London, shares a son with the late rapper, highlighting the personal connections his peers continue to honor.

While speculation and gossip occasionally surface, much of the public focus remains on celebrating Hussle’s positive impact on music and his community. From local programs to artistic tributes, these efforts ensure his influence and values are remembered and preserved.

The temporary renaming of the Hyde Park station and the release of limited-edition TAP cards demonstrate the ongoing commitment of Los Angeles to honor one of its most influential cultural figures.
