Tyler, The Creator’s DON’T TAP THE GLASS Debuts at No. 1 as He Reveals Origins of Album Title

Tyler, The Creator’s latest album DON’T TAP THE GLASS has made a strong impact both commercially and creatively. Released on a rare Monday, the project racked up an impressive 197,000 album-equivalent units in just four days of tracking. That early momentum was enough to push it to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, marking Tyler’s fourth consecutive No. 1 album—a testament to his consistency and star power.
The album, Tyler’s ninth studio release, has received mixed reviews from critics, but fans are largely embracing it as another solid addition to his discography. Known for reinventing his sound with each release, Tyler once again takes listeners into a vivid, concept-driven world filled with lush production, sharp lyricism, and his signature offbeat creativity.
In a recent interview with HOT 97, Tyler shed light on the album’s intriguing title, revealing that it originally had a different purpose entirely. DON’T TAP THE GLASS was once the working name for a planned collaborative project between him and longtime friend and fellow rapper A$AP Rocky.
“DON’T TAP THE GLASS was actually a name that I had for the duo for me and Flacko but it never got used,” Tyler shared, as noted by music outlet Kurrco. “I thought that would be super cool, but we didn’t end up doing that and I just always had that title in the tuck.”
Though the collaboration never materialized, Tyler said he held onto the title, waiting for the right moment to bring it to life. “I always just loved it,” he continued. “And when I started working on this I was like, ‘Oh my God, this feels like that sh*t.’”
When asked why the joint project didn’t happen, Tyler cited a simple but relatable reason: conflicting schedules. He explained that while he’s an early riser who prefers to start recording at 7 a.m., Rocky is more of a night owl, making it difficult for their creative processes to align.
“We have a few records, but scheduling was really hard,” he admitted. “And by scheduling I mean in the literal sense, not like, ‘Oh at the Gucci shoot.’ No, like I wake up at 7 a.m. or 6:30. I’m trying to record at 7 a.m. and be out of there by noon or 1 and finish the rest of my day out at the office and be asleep by 9. That n***a is a night owl.”
Despite the missed opportunity for a full-blown Tyler and A$AP Rocky album, fans can still enjoy DON’T TAP THE GLASS as a reflection of Tyler’s evolving sound and his ability to turn shelved ideas into something impactful. With its early chart dominance and continued buzz, the project stands as another high point in his genre-defying career.
