Cardi B Reflects on Creative Process and Hints at a New Era

Cardi B is taking fans behind the scenes of her creative process, sharing insights from her latest album, Am I the Drama?, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in September. The Bronx rapper revealed that the project took seven years to complete and admitted she often put too much pressure on herself in the studio.
During a recent Spaces session, Cardi explained that for her next project, she wants to prioritize feeling good over perfection. She described overthinking tracks, sometimes spending nearly two weeks on a single song, only to find that the tracks she stresses over most are not always the ones fans gravitate toward. She cited “ErrTime” as an example, a fan favorite that came together naturally and without over-analysis.
Cardi said the experience of creating Am I the Drama? taught her to loosen her grip and trust her instincts. She plans to release future music in a more relaxed way, focusing on songs that reflect her vibe and energy. “Next project, I hope that I just release things,” she said, emphasizing that fans respond most to tracks where she is relaxed and enjoying the process.
The rapper also addressed collaborations on her album, noting that some features were delayed or did not match the energy she envisioned. She kept only the contributions that fit her vision for the project. Cardi further pushed back on the perception that her music focuses solely on sex. She emphasized that much of her content highlights her life, confidence, and street energy, though listeners tend to focus on sexualized aspects when it comes to female rap.
Looking ahead, Cardi B is signaling a new approach: less pressure, more instinct, and a greater emphasis on fun. Fans can expect her next era to be guided by creativity and enjoyment rather than overthinking.
