Cardi B’s New Album Am I the Drama Secures Her Spot in Hip-Hop History

Cardi B’s sophomore album Am I the Drama? has cemented her legacy as one of the most impactful female rappers of all time. The Bronx star’s long-awaited project debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 200,000 first-week units.

Of that total, 110,000 came from streaming, powered by 145.72 million on-demand plays. Another 88,000 were pure sales. These numbers make Cardi the first female rapper in history to debut at the top of the Billboard 200 with her first two albums. Her debut Invasion of Privacy also opened at number one in 2018 with 255,000 first-week sales.

Not even her longtime rival Nicki Minaj achieved this milestone. Nicki’s 2010 debut Pink Friday entered the chart at number two.

Cardi’s latest effort also holds the highest sales tally for a female rapper in 2025. Among all rappers this year, she ranks fourth. Only Playboi Carti’s MUSIC (298,000), Drake’s $ome $exy $ongs 4 U (246,000), and Travis Scott’s JackBoys 2 (232,000) posted higher first-week totals.

In the broader history of female hip-hop, Am I the Drama? sits 11th on the list of biggest first-week sales. The top three remain Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (422,000), Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday (375,000), and Missy Elliott’s Under Construction (259,000).

If the album holds the top spot again next week, Cardi will be the first female rapper since Lauryn Hill in 1998 to lead the Billboard 200 for two consecutive weeks.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has already certified Am I the Drama? platinum. That means over a million units sold in the United States. This quick certification is thanks in part to previously released hits included on the album. “WAP” is now 9x platinum and “Up” is 5x platinum.

The difference between Billboard’s sales count and the RIAA’s certification comes down to methodology. Billboard does not include pre-released singles in first-week totals, while the RIAA counts overall units sold over time.

With two number one debuts, a platinum certification, and record-setting sales in 2025, Cardi B has strengthened her claim as one of the most influential female rappers in history. Few artists in hip-hop have achieved such consistent commercial power.

Her ability to combine massive streaming numbers with strong pure sales reflects a wide and loyal fan base. If Am I the Drama? continues to dominate the charts, Cardi B may not only be the drama but also the undisputed standard-bearer for female rap in this era.
