Freddie Gibbs Explains Why a “Fetti” Sequel with Curren$y Is Unlikely

In 2018, Freddie Gibbs, Curren$y, and The Alchemist teamed up for Fetti, one of the best hip-hop projects of the year. The album earned critical acclaim and sparked two separate follow-ups: two albums by Gibbs and Alchemist, including a Grammy-nominated Alfredo, and a third collaboration between Curren$y and Alchemist. Despite this success, fans hoping for a Fetti sequel may be disappointed. Gibbs recently opened up about the reasons behind the unlikely reunion.

In a recent interview on The Butcher Block podcast, Freddie Gibbs detailed the growing tension between him and Curren$y. He pointed to Curren$y’s lack of promotion for the original Fetti album as a key issue. Gibbs wanted to shoot music videos and even recorded his part for a potential video for the song “Location Remote.” However, when he tried to coordinate with Curren$y, Gibbs says he was ghosted.

“N***a stopped texting back, stopped calling back,” Gibbs explained.

He added, “But the na was my homie before the fact. But with the motherfing business st, motherf*er just looked down on me.”

Some context may explain the difficulties. Curren$y’s son was born a week after Fetti dropped. Becoming a new father likely shifted Curren$y’s priorities away from album promotion. Additionally, Curren$y is known for his rapid release schedule and minimal promotion, preferring to let the music speak for itself without full-scale rollouts.

These differences in approach created a philosophical divide between the two artists. A conversation about these differing strategies could have prevented the public beef, which escalated when Gibbs took shots at Curren$y on the song “Gas Station Sushi” and called himself The Alchemist’s best collaborator.

Curren$y laughed off the diss and has not publicly responded to Gibbs’ recent comments.

Despite their issues, the Fetti collaboration remains a standout in modern hip-hop. It is unfortunate that the duo’s differences may keep them from working together again. Fans of both artists will hope for a resolution, but for now, a Fetti sequel seems unlikely.
