Pusha T Responds to Critics: “I’m Not Trying to Please Anybody but Myself”

Pusha T is shutting down critics who accuse him of focusing too much on drug dealing in his lyrics. During a candid conversation on the Joe & Jada Podcast, the Clipse rapper addressed the longstanding critique head-on.

When asked about the perception that his music revolves mainly around drugs, Pusha was clear and unapologetic:

“You can’t please everybody but 23 years in this, I’m not tryna please nobody but myself, that’s what I care about. I know that my taste, my ear, and what it is that I wanna hear that resonates with that type of person, that’s the type of person I wanna talk to.”

He continued, emphasizing his selective approach to his audience:

“The person who says that… man, I’m sure I don’t even gel with you anyway. I’m positive I don’t like you. I take it with a grain of salt, but more importantly I know who my family is.”

Pusha’s remarks highlight the artist’s commitment to authenticity rather than mass appeal. For over two decades, he has carved out a unique space in hip-hop by staying true to his perspective and storytelling style.

The rapper has recently stirred headlines with pointed comments about Travis Scott. In a revealing interview with Ebro on Apple Music, Pusha shed light on the root of his tension with Scott, tracing it back to an incident during a recording session with Pharrell Williams in Paris.

“I just thought it was disrespectful. We don’t even want you here to be honest. We’re not here to hobnob with any rappers and I personally don’t like rappers who don’t rap. I don’t wanna hear that. I don’t want it,” Pusha said bluntly.

He added that Scott had interrupted the session in a way that felt “backhanded,” despite Pusha having previously tried to be supportive.

“To come and interrupt the session and do something backhanded and not for nothing but I done had to put my arm around you before but to go along with the title – so be it – he does this numerous times. He’ll do it with his mentor, Ye.”

Pusha didn’t hold back on criticizing Scott’s involvement in escalating conflicts within the hip-hop community.

“He was even instrumental in the whole beef now. The ‘Like That’ verse, egging that on. I don’t want nobody who don’t rap to egg nothing on. You don’t rap, stay out of rappers’ business. You specifically, stay out of rappers’ business. Don’t do that.”

He also accused Scott of disloyalty toward Kanye West, his former mentor:

“I’ve already dealt with the lack of loyalty [to his] mentor, the guy he looks up to. I’ve been dealing with the corny shit that goes along with them. So it’s like, I’m in a whole ‘nother place. Don’t bring that over to bring that over to my house.”

Ending on a note affirming his dedication to his craft, Pusha emphasized how focused he has been on his music:

“I just wanted you to have that true context, man…and honestly, Frazier, you got to realize I’ve really been in Paris. I’ve really been making my joints. I’ve really been doing my shit.”

With his unapologetic stance and sharp critiques, Pusha T continues to solidify his reputation as one of hip-hop’s most authentic and respected voices—unafraid to speak his truth both in his music and beyond.
