Yasiin Bey, the artist formerly known as Mos Def, is redefining the album release experience with a cutting-edge approach for his upcoming joint project with The Alchemist, Forensics. In a recent interview with The Guardian on February 21, Bey described the album’s rollout as “lo-fi, hi-tech high art,” marking a bold departure from traditional streaming platforms.

Instead of relying on streaming services, Forensics will be made available through exclusive merchandise sold at live shows and on Bandcamp. These items, including lanyards and branded baseball caps, will feature digital “Bump tags.” When tapped against a user’s smartphone, these tags will grant access to exclusive Forensics content, including the album itself.

It was later announced that the project would be available on Bandcamp for $9.99, with a vinyl release also in the works.
The artwork for Money Christmas—a painting by Spanish-Moroccan artist Anuar Khalifi titled Osanta Bin Lyin—further emphasizes Bey’s politically charged artistic vision. The piece portrays Osama bin Laden dressed as Santa Claus, continuing Bey’s legacy of provocative and thought-provoking imagery.
