Snoop Dogg Shows Humility by Asking Kendrick Lamar for Show Tips: “No Ego in the Game”
Snoop Dogg has been an influential figure in the music industry for decades, but even with his legendary status, the Doggfather remains humble when it comes to learning from the younger generation. In a recent appearance on The Bootleg Kev Podcast (December 18, 2024), Snoop shared how he reached out to Kendrick Lamar for advice on improving his live performances, proving that his desire to evolve never stops.
Snoop revealed that a year and a half ago, while on tour overseas, he was watching Kendrick’s performance at a show in Paris for Amazon. He was so impressed by Lamar’s stage presence and showmanship that he felt compelled to reach out. “I called Kendrick… and I said, ‘Man, how the fuck did you do that show? What I gotta do to make my show like that?’”
Snoop continued, explaining how Kendrick’s simple yet valuable advice led him to enhance his own performances. “He gave me some simple shit, but it was so much information in that small conversation that I ended up making my show even better.” Snoop highlighted that his ability to set aside any ego and approach Kendrick, who he considers “younger than me, flyer than me, doper than me,” was key to his continuous growth in the industry.
The legendary rapper emphasized the importance of learning from others, no matter their age or experience. “That’s what the game is about – learning and getting information and not being too big to ask,” he said. This mindset reflects his commitment to staying relevant and continually refining his craft, a lesson he believes is essential in any career.
In addition to this, Snoop shared a more personal moment during the interview, revealing that he had reached out to Kendrick to apologize for a social media post he made involving a diss track by Drake. Initially unaware of the song’s controversial nature, Snoop posted it thinking it was simply a promotion for his Gin & Juice brand. However, after discovering that Kendrick was upset, he immediately deleted the post and called Lamar to apologize. “Nephew, it’s Uncle Snoop. I got the message. I apologize, I was fucked up. My bad,” he explained.
Despite this incident, Snoop emphasized that he wasn’t offended when Kendrick referenced him in a critical line on a track, proving that their mutual respect and understanding remain strong. Snoop’s ability to admit mistakes and learn from them further reinforces his commitment to growth, both as an artist and as a person.
