Cardi B Reveals She Once Turned Down the Super Bowl Halftime Show

Hip-hop and rap artists have become regular fixtures at the Super Bowl Halftime Show since Jay-Z and Roc Nation partnered with the NFL in 2019. Travis Scott, Big Boi, Bad Bunny, The Weeknd, Snoop Dogg, Rihanna, and Kendrick Lamar have all graced the stage. Cardi B recently revealed that she too could have been part of that lineup.
In a new interview with Billboard, captured by HipHopDX, Cardi B said she was once offered the chance to perform at the Super Bowl but turned it down. She could not recall whether the offer came in 2018 or 2019, but she explained her decision. “What year I got asked to do the Super Bowl? I’m not sure if it was 2019, 2018, and I denied. But I’m glad. I feel like soon. If I get to do it, I feel like I’m going to have more hits, and I feel like I’m going to be more experienced. And hey, I’mma eat that up.”
Had she accepted the offer at that time, she could have performed much of her debut album Invasion of Privacy, which remains the only rap album where every track is certified platinum by the RIAA. The only other rap project with that distinction is Travis Scott’s ASTROWORLD.
Cardi B has since expanded her catalog, though she has mostly released singles rather than full projects. Tracks like “WAP,” “Up,” “Bongos,” and “Money” have kept her at the top of conversations in hip-hop and pop. Fans will not have to wait much longer for more, as her sophomore album AM I THE DRAMA? drops on September 19. The project will include 23 songs, with confirmed hits “Outside” and “Imaginary Playerz” already gaining traction.
The release of her long-awaited second album comes ahead of her first-ever headlining tour, giving Cardi B another chance to showcase her growth as a performer. With more hits under her belt and a stronger stage presence, she now appears more prepared than ever to take on the Super Bowl stage if the NFL comes calling again.
Cardi B’s decision years ago to wait may have set her up for an even bigger moment in the future, as she continues to solidify her place as one of hip-hop’s most prominent stars.
