Nas and DJ Premier are officially releasing their long-awaited joint album. Titled Light-Years, the project will drop on December 12 through Mass Appeal Records. Fans have eagerly anticipated this collaboration, which promises to deliver both new tracks and previously unreleased recordings from their earlier sessions together.
Light-Years is the seventh and final installment in Mass Appeal’s Legend Has It… series. The series has featured major New York hip-hop acts throughout 2025, including Slick Rick with Victory, Raekwon with The Emperor’s New Clothes, Ghostface Killah with Supreme Clientele 2, Mobb Deep with Infinite, the late Big L with Harlem’s Finest: Return of the King, and De La Soul with Cabin in the Sky. Nas, co-owner of Mass Appeal, described the series as capturing the energy and urgency of 1995 while moving forward into 2025, celebrating hip-hop’s legacy and influence.
The album marks the culmination of Nas and DJ Premier’s decades-long partnership. Together, they produced classics like “N.Y. State of Mind,” “Represent,” “Nas is Like,” and “2nd Childhood.” Rumors of a full-length project circulated for years before being officially confirmed last year with the release of the lead single Define My Name.
Nas revealed that Light-Years will also feature some older tracks they recorded during early discussions of an album. He told Rolling Stone that at least two of these older ideas have been included on the final release. He emphasized that the project has been a long time coming for both him and DJ Premier, adding that he is eager for fans to hear the completed work.
Light-Years promises to blend the legendary sounds of two hip-hop icons with the innovation and creativity that have defined their careers, offering both nostalgia and fresh energy for listeners. The December 12 release ensures that fans will soon experience the full scope of this historic collaboration.
