De La Soul have officially kicked off the rollout for their long-awaited tenth studio album Cabin in the Sky, set for release on November 21 through Mass Appeal Records. The project marks the legendary trio’s first full-length release in almost ten years and signals a major return for one of hip-hop’s most influential groups.
The album features a powerful lineup of collaborators. Nas, Black Thought, Killer Mike, Common, and Little Dragon’s Yukimi Nagano all make appearances. On production, the trio enlisted heavyweights DJ Premier, Pete Rock, and Supa Dave West, ensuring the project stays rooted in classic hip-hop craftsmanship while pushing forward creatively.
The first single, The Package, sets the tone for what’s to come. Produced by Pete Rock, the track blends soulful samples with hard-hitting drums, showcasing De La Soul’s unmatched chemistry and lyrical finesse. It features verses from Posdnuos alongside posthumous bars from Trugoy the Dove, who passed away in 2023. The record feels both nostalgic and forward-looking, a testament to the group’s enduring legacy.
“Step to us with a Goliath, we got a David right here,” Posdnuos raps before his verse transitions seamlessly into Trugoy’s. The song captures their creative bond and shows how De La Soul continue to elevate their message even through loss.
Speaking at New York Comic Con in October, Posdnuos shared the inspiration behind the album title. Cabin in the Sky draws from the 1943 musical film featuring Ethel Waters, Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington. “We were working and working, and I came across this movie. And I’m like, ‘Yo, this title is crazy!’ Immediately, I felt Dave,” he said, referring to Trugoy.
He also reflected on the emotional process of finishing the album without his longtime partner. “When we lost him, I came and got [Maseo] out of the hole. We were all broken, but I took on that role where I was like, ‘Yo, man, we gotta keep Dave alive, we gotta celebrate him.’” Posdnuos added that writing lyrics often feels guided by Trugoy’s spirit. “There are times where I’m writing rhymes and I’m getting goosebumps ’cause I feel like Dave would be saying, ‘Yo, that’s dope!’”
Cabin in the Sky is part of Mass Appeal Records’ Legend Has It.. series, a year-long tribute to New York hip-hop icons. Previous releases include Slick Rick’s Victory, Raekwon’s The Emperor’s New Clothes, Ghostface Killah’s Supreme Clientele 2, Mobb Deep’s Infinite, and Big L’s Harlem’s Finest: Return of the King.
Label founder Nas will close out the series in December with his long-awaited joint album with DJ Premier. For fans of De La Soul, Cabin in the Sky is more than a comeback. It is a celebration of legacy, resilience, and the unbreakable bond that continues to define one of hip-hop’s most enduring groups.
