Kool & The Gang’s Michael Sumler Dies in Georgia Car Crash at 71

Michael Sumler, a longtime member of the Kool & The Gang family and affectionately known as “Chicago Mike,” tragically died over the weekend in a car accident in Cobb County, Georgia. He was 71 years old.
According to Fox 5 Atlanta, the crash occurred on Veterans Memorial Highway when Sumler’s vehicle collided with another. Authorities have not yet released additional details regarding the incident, but the sudden loss has sent shockwaves through the music and entertainment community.
Sumler was best known for his infectious energy on stage with Kool & The Gang, where he worked from 2000 to 2015. Though not a core performing member of the band, he served as their wardrobe valet and crowd motivator, hyping up audiences and dancing at the start of their shows. His behind-the-scenes role made him a beloved part of the touring experience, both to the group and their fans.
In a heartfelt Facebook post shared on Wednesday, Kool & The Gang paid tribute to Sumler:
“We’re deeply saddened to hear about the passing of our longtime wardrobe valet, Mike Sumler. Mike worked alongside Kool & the Gang from 2000–2015, making sure the guys looked their best on stage every night. He also hyped the crowd with his energy and dance moves at the top of the show. Most recently, Mike helped Kool with LeKool champagne events. Everyone here at Kool & the Gang has fond memories of Mike and will miss him. May he rest in peace.”
Sumler’s impact extended beyond the stage. Fans and friends filled social media with tributes, recalling his kindness, spirit, and ability to inspire. One commenter wrote, “So sorry for your loss. He sure did keep you guys looking sharp. Love your work. Forever such talent is hard to come by. Carry on.” Another added, “Such a shock. Mike was such a sweet man. So kind. All my deepest condolences to the Kool family and Mike’s loved ones.”
Mableton Mayor Michael Owens also released a statement honoring Sumler’s legacy:
“We are saddened by the death of musician Michael Sumler. ‘Chicago Mike’ contributed so much to the music and entertainment communities. His style and energy added flare and excitement to Kool and the Gang for decades. The city of Mableton, council members and I join his family, friends and fans in mourning his loss.”
Adrian Meeks of Song Source Music Group reflected on Sumler’s enduring influence within the music industry, telling Fox 5, “He always wanted to see other people succeed in the business that he’d been around most of all of his life. He was the bridge, you know, for inspiring artists and songwriters and producers and musicians to the legends.”
Sumler’s passing follows other recent losses for Kool & The Gang. Founding saxophonist Dennis Thomas died in 2021 at age 70, and drummer George Brown passed away from cancer in 2023.
Michael Sumler will be remembered not only for his contributions to the stage but for the passion and joy he brought to everyone around him. His legacy lives on in the music, memories, and the countless lives he touched.
