Kendrick Lamar Gives Lefty Gunplay His Flowers for New Album ‘Can’t Get Right’

Kendrick Lamar is showing major love to Lefty Gunplay following the release of Can’t Get Right, the rising West Coast artist’s latest collaborative album with JasonMartin. The project, which dropped May 9, marks Lefty’s first full-length release since his breakout feature on Kendrick’s standout GNX track “TV Off.”
While the rap world continues to buzz over the growing momentum of Lefty Gunplay, perhaps no co-sign is more meaningful than the one he just received from Kendrick himself.
Kendrick Lamar Applauds Lefty’s Debut Album
In a screenshot of a text exchange posted by JasonMartin, the rapper sent Kendrick a link to the new album with the message “Mission accomplished.” Lamar responded with high praise:
“Wow. N***a y’all did that!!! I appreciate this too much dawg. The first album of a new artist from GNX. And it’s going up. I’m bout to thump it out here. I’m proud of Lefty. And always love for u playing big roles behind them boards.”
Kendrick’s message serves as an official stamp of approval — both for the album and for Lefty Gunplay’s emerging role within the GNX movement. It’s clear Lamar sees Lefty as more than a moment. He sees him as a major piece of the West Coast’s future.
More Kendrick Collaborations on the Horizon?
Lefty Gunplay isn’t done yet. During a recent interview with Bootleg Kev, he revealed that he and Kendrick have already recorded two to three songs together. He added that Kendrick personally told him:
“We’re going to work again, for sure.”
Even more exciting? Lefty confirmed Kendrick is working on a deluxe version of GNX and that he’s been involved behind the scenes. “He’s very secretive,” Lefty said, also noting he had to sign an NDA before stepping into the studio with the Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper.
“Everybody thought I was playing — I wasn’t. I almost blew it. ‘Cause we signed NDAs and I couldn’t wait to tell everybody,” he admitted. “They were like, ‘You’re going [in the studio] with Kendrick,’ and it didn’t hit me ’til he walked in there and gave me a hug. He’s been locked in with me since April and he said that I’m the missing piece that the West Coast needed.”
“TV Off” Remains a Breakout Moment
Lefty Gunplay’s profile skyrocketed following his unforgettable four-word hook at the end of “TV Off,” one of the most popular tracks from GNX. The song peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was even used to close out Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime Show — though Lefty was not brought on stage.
Still, the buzz hasn’t died down, and fans continue to anticipate a potential music video for the track. With two major features already under his belt and a new album receiving critical acclaim, Lefty is fast becoming a voice to watch in West Coast hip-hop.
What’s Next for Lefty Gunplay?
With Kendrick Lamar acting as a mentor and co-signer, Lefty Gunplay’s rise seems inevitable. His blend of street-hardened authenticity and infectious personality has resonated deeply with fans looking for fresh energy in the genre. Can’t Get Right is just the beginning.
Between teased collaborations, a possible deluxe edition of GNX, and growing public visibility, Lefty is carving out a lane that feels both new and deeply rooted in West Coast tradition. If Kendrick’s words are anything to go by, the “missing piece” is exactly where he needs to be.
