Drake Urges Tory Lanez’s Release, Shares Petition for Governor’s Pardon

Drake has once again voiced his support for Tory Lanez, this time by publicly calling for the embattled Canadian rapper’s release from prison. On his Instagram Stories, Drake shared a link to an online petition that asks California Governor Gavin Newsom to pardon Lanez, who is currently serving a 10-year sentence for shooting fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion.

Alongside the link, the “God’s Plan” hitmaker added a simple but pointed message: “@torylanez come home soon.”

This isn’t the first time Drake has shown support for his longtime collaborator. Even after Lanez was convicted in December 2022 for shooting Megan in the foot, Drake continued to stand behind him. Last year, the Toronto superstar posted a photo of Lanez on social media with the caption “3 you,” a reference to love and solidarity from prison lingo.

Drake also appeared to allude to the incident in his controversial 2022 track “Circo Loco,” rapping: “This b***h lie about getting shots, but she still she a stallion / She don’t even get the joke, but she still smiling.” Many interpreted the line as a direct jab at Megan Thee Stallion, suggesting that he doubted her claims.

Megan didn’t take the lyric lightly. She quickly fired back online, writing: “Stop using my shooting for clout bitch ass n****s! Since when tf is it cool to joke abt women getting shot!” She criticized the hypocrisy of people—especially male rappers—rallying around a man accused of harming a woman while showing selective outrage over lesser issues.

The tension didn’t stop there. In early 2024, Megan released her track “Hiss,” seemingly aimed at both Drake and Lanez, where she rapped, “Cosplay gangsters, fake-ass accents / Posted in another n***a hood like a bad bitch,” further fueling the feud.

Meanwhile, Lanez himself has faced serious challenges behind bars. Just weeks ago, he was stabbed 14 times by another inmate, sustaining severe injuries including two collapsed lungs. Though the attack was life-threatening, reports indicate he is expected to recover fully.

The online petition promoted by Drake is the latest flashpoint in the ongoing debate over Lanez’s conviction and treatment. Supporters argue that the sentence was excessive, while critics view Drake’s continued advocacy as dismissive of Megan’s trauma and the seriousness of gun violence.

As of now, neither Governor Newsom nor his office has responded to the petition, and major platforms have not issued official statements on Drake’s call to action. But one thing is clear: Drake’s public loyalty to Tory Lanez is reigniting conversation around one of hip-hop’s most polarizing legal sagas.
