Billboard Names Nicki Minaj the Greatest Female Rapper of All Time, Sparking Debate

Billboard has released its official ranking of the greatest female rappers of all time, and the list has ignited heated discussions across social media. Featuring 25 artists, including legends like Missy Elliott, Lauryn Hill, and Lil’ Kim, the ranking crowns Nicki Minaj as the undisputed queen of female rap.

According to Billboard, their criteria included: body of work and achievements (chart performance and certifications), cultural impact and influence, longevity, lyrical ability, and flow.

Social Media Reacts to the Rankings

When The Neighborhood Talk shared the list on Instagram, fans quickly voiced their opinions. Some argued that certain artists were overlooked or ranked too low.

“Foxy Brown deserves to be in the top 5 slot,” one user wrote. “Her influence is undeniable. I’m always amazed at how Hip Hop tries to push her to the background as if she isn’t an ICON who’s still unmatched lyrically. No one, and I mean NO ONE, can imitate her classic delivery.”

Others debated the placements of newer artists. “Glo and Latto are better RAPPERS than Megan Thee Stallion,” another user claimed.

Despite the controversies, many celebrated Nicki Minaj’s well-earned top ranking. “And it still boggles me how the #1 female rapper has yet to receive a Grammy…. Y’all keep letting these people play with our culture right in our face all because y’all don’t like her,” one fan wrote.

Why Billboard Chose Nicki Minaj

In explaining why Minaj took the top spot, Billboard credited her with redefining the female rap landscape over the past 15 years.

“Fifteen years after she left Earth with her godly verse on Kanye West’s ‘Monster’ and delivered her seminal Pink Friday debut album, the First Lady of Young Money is still running laps around the competition,” the publication wrote.

They praised her for not only dominating Hip Hop but also influencing pop music and paving the way for a new generation of female rappers. Whether as Harajuku Barbie, Roman Zolanski, Chun-Li, or simply Onika, Billboard argued that Minaj’s impact on rap is undeniable.

Other Notable Rankings

Following Nicki Minaj in the top five were Missy Elliott, Lauryn Hill, Lil’ Kim, and Queen Latifah—each celebrated for their lasting contributions to Hip Hop. Other modern artists who made the list included Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, and Doechii.

While debates rage on, one thing is clear: Billboard’s rankings have once again fueled conversations about the ever-evolving landscape of female rap.
