Wu-Tang Clan Announces New Album; Black Samson, The Bastard Swordsman, Set for Record Store Day Release

The legendary Wu-Tang Clan has officially announced their first album in nearly a decade, Black Samson, The Bastard Swordsman: From the Wu-Tang, the Saga Continues Collection. Slated for release on Record Store Day, April 12, the highly anticipated 12-track LP will feature contributions from all living members of the group, along with an impressive roster of guest artists.

A Unique Concept

The album, entirely produced by Mathematics, pays homage to the Blaxploitation and kung fu films that heavily influenced the group’s style. Mathematics, who also produced 2017’s The Saga Continues, shared the inspiration behind the album’s title in an interview with Variety.

“The album has a certain feel to it. It’s an homage to Blaxploitation movies like Black Samson, Black Caesar, and Super Fly—the movies I grew up watching in the 1970s,” he explained. “The Bastard Swordsman part is an ode to the old karate flicks, which all of us in Wu-Tang loved. Bastard Swordsman is one of my personal favorites.”

A Collaborative Effort

Mathematics described the challenges of bringing the group together, given their busy schedules and ongoing tours. However, the connection within the Wu-Tang Clan made the process rewarding. “When I need them, I call them. All praises due, they show up. It takes time, but when we do get in the studio, the vibe is always right,” he said.

Method Man also expressed his excitement about the project, praising Mathematics for his work on the album. “Mathematics adds another chamber to the Saga Continues collection. I’m proud of him. Following his last solid outing, this one looks to be another banger for the history books,” Method Man stated.

Star-Studded Features

In addition to Wu-Tang’s core members, Black Samson, The Bastard Swordsman boasts a lineup of stellar guest appearances. Kurupt lends his talents to the opening track, “Sucker Free City,” while rap legend Kool G Rap joins RZA and U-God on “Roar of the Lion (The Lion’s Pit).” Other notable collaborators include Benny The Butcher, 38 Spesh, RJ Payne, and KXNG Crooked, ensuring the album is a showcase of both classic and contemporary hip-hop excellence.

Tracklist Highlights

The album’s 12 tracks are a blend of nostalgic Wu-Tang grit and fresh, innovative sounds. Highlights include “Mandingo,” featuring Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, Method Man, and Cappadonna, and “Shaolin vs. Lama,” a high-energy collaboration between Raekwon and Inspectah Deck. Fans can also look forward to the vinyl-exclusive bonus track, “Charleston Blue, Legend of a Fighter,” featuring KXNG Crooked, Cappadonna, and Nicole Bus.
