Tory Lanez has remained active in music despite being incarcerated, but his latest attempt to record a verse was unexpectedly cut short by chaos. According to TMZ, the Canadian rapper was in the middle of a makeshift recording session when a prison riot broke out around him.

Footage obtained by the outlet reportedly shows Lanez rapping as a mass brawl erupts in the background. Prison officers were forced to intervene using pepper spray, bringing the session to an abrupt end. Neither Lanez nor the California jail where he is being held have commented on the incident.

Previously, his recording equipment was seized by prison officials, preventing him from continuing his series of tracks dubbed The Prison Tapes. Ceasar McDowell, CEO of Unite the People and part of Lanez’s legal team, confirmed that inmates are not allowed to possess recording devices for security reasons.

Following the seizure, Lanez took to Instagram to express his frustration, alleging that his cell was raided not just because he was recording, but because of the impact The Prison Tapes was having. He claimed his music was part of a larger plan to support fellow inmates by funding legal representation for those seeking appeals or resentencing.

Lanez’s Mission to Help Inmates

In his social media statement, Lanez detailed his goal of using proceeds from The Prison Tapes to provide legal assistance to inmates who couldn’t afford proper representation. Despite officials halting his recording activities, he revealed that his efforts had already led to legal representation for 472 inmates and the reopening of 476 cases since July.

“I was placed in jail to suffer, to feel, and to witness firsthand the pain and oppression being inflicted upon the young Black and Brown men and women of my generation,” he wrote. “I knew I had to change this injustice.”
