Ja Rule Delivers Emotional Tribute to Irv Gotti at Private Funeral Service

On Wednesday, February 19, friends, family, and industry peers gathered in New York to honor the life of Irving “Irv Gotti” Lorenzo in an intimate funeral service. The co-founder of Murder Inc. and legendary producer passed away earlier this month, leaving behind a lasting legacy in hip-hop and R&B.

Among those paying tribute was Ja Rule, Gotti’s longtime friend and collaborator. Overcome with emotion, the rapper delivered a heartfelt speech that resonated deeply with those in attendance, including hip-hop mogul JAY-Z.

“Irv, I love you,” Ja Rule said, his voice breaking with grief. “Everyone in this room loves you. You touched everybody in your own way. I know everybody has their moments of that with him. We’re all here in celebration of your life because it will live on forever. I love you, my brother. See you when I get there.”

Gotti’s family had initially planned a large public service at Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral in Jamaica, Queens, on February 18. However, they later opted for a more private gathering first, allowing close family and friends to mourn in a more personal setting.

“Please be advised that the funeral services for Irving ‘Irv Gotti’ Lorenzo will not take place on Tuesday, February 18,” a statement on his official Instagram page read. “Instead, there will be a private service for family and close friends on Wednesday. Following the private service, a public procession will occur. Further details regarding the procession will be provided soon.”

Irv Gotti’s passing was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter on February 5, shortly after news broke that he had suffered a second stroke. The music executive had experienced a minor stroke the previous year but was said to be recovering.

Gotti played a pivotal role in shaping early 2000s hip-hop and R&B, launching Murder Inc. Records alongside his brother Chris in 1998. The label produced massive hits for artists like Ja Rule, Ashanti, and Lloyd, solidifying its place in music history. Some of its most iconic tracks include Ja Rule’s Holla Holla, Ashanti’s Foolish, and collaborations like Always on Time.

Beyond Murder Inc., Gotti was instrumental in the careers of major artists, producing hits like Can I Live for JAY-Z, What’s My Name for DMX, and What’s Luv? by Fat Joe featuring Ashanti and Ja Rule. His influence extended beyond production, as he played a key role in shaping the sound and culture of early 2000s hip-hop.

Despite his success, Gotti’s career was not without controversy. In 2003, the federal government raided Murder Inc.’s headquarters in connection to an alleged money-laundering investigation involving drug kingpin Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff. In 2005, both Irv and Chris Gotti were charged but ultimately acquitted of all charges.

Tributes have poured in from across the music industry since news of his passing broke. Ashanti, who had a well-documented history with Gotti, shared a message reflecting on their “ups and downs,” while artists and executives alike have recognized his contributions to hip-hop culture.

Though his life was cut short, Irv Gotti’s legacy will continue to live on through the music he helped create and the artists he championed. His impact on hip-hop remains undeniable, and as Ja Rule said in his emotional farewell, his spirit will forever be celebrated.
