Doechii Opens Up About Overcoming Suicidal Thoughts After High School Bullying

Grammy Award-winning rapper Doechii has revealed that she once contemplated suicide due to the severe bullying she faced in high school. In a candid interview with The Cut, the rising star shared how she reached a breaking point but ultimately found strength in her identity.

A Turning Point in the Darkness

“I was getting bullied so bad that I was thinking about killing myself,” Doechii admitted. “I realized, **‘Oh, fuck, I’m gonna kill myself, and then I’m gonna be the only one dead. The bullies aren’t gonna be with me, and everything they said is not coming with me either. I would just be gone.’”

Rather than succumbing to despair, Doechii experienced a moment of clarity that changed her perspective on life:

“And then I was like, ‘Fuck that! Fuck that shit! I’m not going for that!’ And this wash of peace came over me, and I received ‘I am Doechii.’”

The rapper described this as a pivotal moment, one where she decided to take control of her own story rather than let the negativity define her.

“I made a choice, a decision. I am the most important character in this movie. This is my motherfucking movie.”

A Common Struggle Among Women in Music

Doechii is not the only Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) artist who has opened up about struggling with mental health due to bullying. Fellow labelmate SZA previously shared her own experiences with bullying in an interview with People.

“I was bullied because I wasn’t quiet and I was awkward at the same time,” SZA said. “I wasn’t this tiny sad victim, but I was more so attacked just because it was giving ‘What is wrong with you?’ energy.

She admitted that the ridicule affected her deeply:

“I always thought, ‘Oh my God, I’ll never have the approval of anyone in life. This must be my defining factor, this must be the bottom line.’”

Despite these struggles, SZA later realized that the very things that made her feel like an outcast were the same qualities that helped shape her into the artist she is today.

“If I had such a fulfilling existence and experience in high school, I would’ve felt validated to the point where I didn’t need to do anymore. [So] I just had to do more, I had to be more because I was like, ‘This shitty experience can’t be the end of it because if it is, I am cooked.’”

Turning Pain into Power

Doechii and SZA’s experiences highlight how trauma and adversity can often fuel creative ambition. Both artists have turned their pain into powerful music that resonates with fans worldwide.

By speaking openly about their struggles, they not only humanize their journey but also offer hope to others who may be going through similar challenges. Doechii’s ability to reclaim her narrative and find empowerment in her own identity serves as an inspiration to many who have ever felt isolated or misunderstood.
