The Roots Celebrate 30th Anniversary of Do You Want More?!!!??! with NYC Residency and a New Album on the Horizon

The Roots recently marked a monumental milestone in their illustrious career, celebrating the 30th anniversary of their groundbreaking major-label debut, Do You Want More?!!!??! The iconic group, led by founding members Questlove and Black Thought, delighted fans with the announcement of a special residency at New York City’s legendary Blue Note Jazz Club. Over three nights from March 13 to 15, The Roots will perform six intimate shows, revisiting material from the celebrated album, with a few surprises along the way.

Released in 1995, Do You Want More?!!!??! was The Roots’ second studio effort but their first on a major label, following their independently released debut, Organix. The album marked a pivotal moment in their career, paving the way for the creation of 13 more albums. Reflecting on the record’s significance, Questlove shared on Instagram, “This was the first record that opened the door for us to create 13, 14, 15, 16 more albums.” Despite their extensive catalog, The Roots have not released a full-length project since 2014’s …And Then You Shoot Your Cousin. However, with a resurgence of creative energy, anticipation for their 15th studio album has grown.

In a 2023 episode of his Questlove Supreme podcast, Questlove credited the collaboration between Common and Pete Rock on The Auditorium Vol. 1 as a major catalyst for The Roots’ new wave of inspiration. “This album is going to spark a renaissance,” he declared, drawing parallels between the project and the highly anticipated releases from other hip-hop legends like Nas, DJ Premier, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, and De La Soul. The energy surrounding these projects, he noted, has also fueled creativity within The Roots.

Questlove shared how witnessing Common and Pete Rock’s seamless collaboration reignited their creative process. “I walked into the studio and told Tariq, ‘They made the perfect summit record—balanced, cohesive, and powerful,’” he recalled, speaking of Black Thought’s inspiration. A subsequent performance at the Hollywood Bowl further amplified this newfound motivation, pushing Black Thought to channel the dynamic energy of their early days.

While details about the new album remain closely guarded, Questlove has hinted at a significant release date in 2025. “It’s not 2024,” he teased, “but the timing will make perfect sense when it arrives.” For fans of The Roots, the anticipation is palpable, and the upcoming album promises to be a major event in the world of hip-hop.

As they celebrate Do You Want More?!!!??!‘s 30th anniversary, The Roots continue to prove that their legacy is far from over, with new creative endeavors keeping fans eagerly awaiting what’s next for the legendary group.
