Redman Opens Up About Two Years of Celibacy and Its Transformative Impact
Hip-hop icon Redman has shared that he practiced celibacy for over two years, describing it as one of the most transformative decisions of his life. Speaking to Ambrosia For Heads, the rapper detailed how abstaining from sex and other distractions helped him regain clarity and focus during a challenging period.
“My girl and I broke up maybe three, four years ago. I was going through such a sh*t divorce that lasted seven years,” Redman revealed. “It played a role in why it took so long to drop Muddy Waters [Too]. I had so much on my plate.”
To cope with the turbulence in his life, Redman committed to celibacy and other forms of abstinence, including giving up smoking. “I actually fasted two years and a half — no f***ing, no smoking. Straight two years and a half. It was the best thing I could have done in my life.”
The Challenges of Celibacy
Despite the benefits, the journey wasn’t without its struggles. Redman admitted to moments of frustration, saying: “Believe me, I wanted to. I was fighting it, I was sweating. I was in my house going crazy ’cause I live alone. I was constantly talking to myself. Me and God, just back and forth. But I made it.”
The sacrifice paid off in unexpected ways. “It cleared out so much distraction. My reception is much clearer now. Having no sex is nothing to me now because it was all feeding the flesh,” he explained. “Once I did that, I was able to control how I moved, what I like, [and] what is not good for me.”
Celibacy Among Other Celebrities
Redman isn’t the only artist to experiment with celibacy. In 2024, GloRilla attempted a 90-day celibacy challenge but quickly faced difficulties, humorously sharing on social media: “I’m on da 9th day & my vision blurry af! Send help.”
R&B star Omarion also embraced celibacy for three years, using the time to focus on his faith and personal growth. “I kinda took it on as a challenge,” he said on the Know Thyself podcast. “It allowed me to step out of this world and have the responsibility of being a sex symbol and a young adult.”
