Kendrick Lamar and Drake Neck-and-Neck in Album Sales Midway Through 2025

As 2025 hits its halfway mark, the race for album sales supremacy is heating up between two of hip-hop’s biggest powerhouses. Kendrick Lamar and Drake are virtually tied in total album sales for the year, with Lamar narrowly ahead at 3.6 million and Drake just behind at 3.5 million. The numbers, shared by DJ Akademiks in a new Instagram post ranking the top 20 artists in album sales, highlight the continued dominance of both rappers — although neither holds the top spot.

That honor goes to country sensation Morgan Wallen, who has sold an impressive 4.4 million albums so far in 2025. His fourth studio album, I’m the Problem, released in May, has proven to be a massive success. Wallen has also been on a nationwide tour, adding momentum to the album’s commercial performance. At No. 2 is pop icon Taylor Swift, still a major force even without releasing new material since her April 2024 album.

Kendrick Lamar’s commercial run was largely fueled by GNX, his critically acclaimed November 2024 album. The project produced several standout tracks, including “Luther,” a collaborative single with SZA that dominated streaming charts. GNX continued to generate strong sales well into 2025, further cementing Lamar’s place at the forefront of the genre.

Drake, never far from the spotlight, released Some Sexy Songs 4 U with PartyNextDoor in February. The joint album featured hits like “Nokia,” which helped drive strong first-quarter numbers. Though slightly trailing Kendrick in album sales, Drake’s momentum remains high thanks to new releases and high-profile visibility.

Last weekend, Drake released a surprise single titled “What Did I Miss?” The song addresses his much-publicized feud with Kendrick Lamar and reflects on the fallout within his inner circle. “I saw bro went to Pop Out with them, but been d*ck riding gang since ‘Headlines,’” Drake raps in a track that’s as personal as it is confrontational. “Y’all been on that type of timing for too long,” he adds, signaling that the tensions between the two aren’t cooling off anytime soon.

In addition to the single, Drake launched a YouTube livestream titled ICEMAN EPISODE 1, teasing what appears to be a new musical era. Fans speculate that his next solo album could be coming soon — a move that could dramatically shift the balance in the album sales race as the year continues.

Despite their feud, Kendrick Lamar and Drake remain two of the most influential and commercially viable artists in music today. With months still left in 2025 and rumors of new music on the way from both camps, the battle for the top spot is far from over.
