NLE Choppa Ventures into R&B with a New Album by Year’s End
Memphis rapper NLE Choppa is switching gears as 2024 comes to a close, revealing plans to drop an R&B album before the year ends. Over the weekend, Choppa took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce his unexpected genre shift, writing, “Dropping A R&B Project Before Year Out Mama 💕,” accompanied by heart emojis.
This R&B project will mark a departure from the hard-hitting style fans have come to expect from the 21-year-old artist. It follows the release of his September album Slut SZN, which served as a soundtrack for his self-directed remake of the cult classic stoner comedy The Wash, originally helmed by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg.
A New Challenge
While NLE Choppa is no stranger to pushing creative boundaries, stepping into the R&B world showcases his versatility as an artist. Known for his energetic delivery and powerful presence in the rap scene, this move could unveil a more melodic and soulful side to the rapper’s artistry.
His announcement comes on the heels of his successful Slut SZN album and film project, which featured appearances from Lil Wayne, Sukihana, and several influencers. In NLE Choppa Presents: The Wash, Choppa not only took on a lead role but also made his directorial debut, collaborating with seasoned music video director Ben Marc. According to reports, the film was unscripted, with cast members improvising their roles, highlighting Choppa’s creativity and willingness to experiment.
A Response to Doubters
This new venture might also be a way for NLE Choppa to further solidify his place in the music world. Back in September, the rapper expressed frustration after being left off Complex’s list of the 20 best rappers in their 20s.
In a fiery six-minute rant, Choppa defended his achievements, pointing to his platinum certifications, sold-out tours, and dominance in the male hip-hop scene. “I’m 21, bro. Who did what I did at 21?” he asked, emphasizing his impressive track record, which includes 18 platinum plaques and a global fanbase.
Though he expressed no ill will toward the artists who made the list, including Playboi Carti, GloRilla, and Lil Uzi Vert, Choppa passionately argued for his inclusion, suggesting the list should’ve expanded to 21 names.
As Choppa prepares to drop his R&B album, fans are eager to see how this new chapter unfolds. While many know him as a force in hip-hop, this pivot to a more melodic genre demonstrates his ambition and versatility as an artist.
Whether the album delivers heartfelt ballads or catchy R&B anthems, it’s clear NLE Choppa is ready to challenge himself and expand his artistic horizons. The project will likely give fans a deeper look at his range, proving that his talent goes far beyond rap.
With 2024 winding down, Choppa’s upcoming release has the potential to cap off an already impressive year with another bold, genre-defying move.
