Doechii Reflects on Grammy Nominations and Kendrick Lamar’s Support
Doechii’s impressive four Grammy nominations — including Best Rap Album and Best New Artist — may have surprised many, but the rapper herself is feeling an uncanny sense of déjà vu. Speaking to HipHopDX’s Jeremy Hecht at the Give Her FlowHERS gala in Los Angeles on November 8, Doechii expressed that the recognition, while incredible, felt like a familiar milestone.
“It feels like I’ve been here before,” she shared. “I feel like I’ve received this before. So I feel aligned.” The TDE artist, who has steadily risen in prominence, showed a grounded sense of confidence in her achievements.
When asked about her Grammy nominations, Doechii also expressed admiration for her labelmate ScHoolboy Q, who she believes also deserved recognition. “He deserved that spot as well,” she said. “I think that we both have very strong projects.”
Her success this year highlights the early and continued support from none other than Kendrick Lamar, who recently praised her as the “hardest” rapper in the game. In a rare social media post last month, Lamar endorsed Doechii’s talent by sharing the artwork for her mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal along with the caption, “the hardest out 🐊.”
Duly appreciative, Doechii responded with gratitude, saying, “Thank you Dot. You the greatest.” She added, “Getting your flowers while you can still smell them >>>,” emphasizing her deep appreciation for Lamar’s public praise.
Doechii’s close ties with Kendrick Lamar continue to blossom, further cemented by her appearance in a CashApp commercial produced by Lamar’s creative company, pgLang. The collaboration has sparked discussions about future creative partnerships.
Although she has spoken about her desire to collaborate with Kendrick, Doechii admits she doesn’t feel quite ready yet. On The Joe Budden Podcast, she revealed, “I don’t assume anything and I also don’t feel entitled to a Kendrick feature but I would absolutely love that. That’s the goal.” She acknowledged that she still feels she has room to grow before she’s ready for such a major collaboration, saying, “I don’t think I have the record right now for that opportunity.”
With these Grammy nominations, ongoing support from Kendrick Lamar, and a growing fanbase, Doechii is carving her path as one of the most promising artists in hip-hop today. As she continues to evolve, her future looks incredibly bright, and it’s clear that we’ll be hearing a lot more from her in the years to come.
