Cardi B Lauds “Small” Artists With Grammy Nominations Amid Calls For Boycott
Cardi B Lauds “Underrated” Artists With Grammy Nominations Amid Calls For Boycott! Even as controversy around the 2021 Grammy Awards rages on, Cardi B took to social media to acknowledge and congratulate some this year’s little-known nominees. The Bronx rapper mentioned the rising calls for a boycott of the Grammys as well as the displeasure some artists and fans have expressed over alleged snubs. She however argued that the drama oftentimes overshadows the achievements of “underrated” artists who have worked decades for such a moment.
“I do feel that there were some albums and songs that should have been considered for nominations, maybe next year they will get it right,” she wrote. “However, let’s not forget the Grammy’s nominated soo many independent Black artists this year that don’t get the exposure by blogs, magazines, and other award shows.”
Cardi B name-dropped artists like Royce 5’9”, Chika, Freddie Gibbs, Kaytranada, Brittany Howard, Jay Electronica, Free Nationals, D Smoke, Thundercat, among others.
“It’s frustrating sometimes to work and work on your craft and you feel overlooked because you might not look like others, are not mixxy,” she wrote, “so you not always around other artists, you rap or sing about different material, you stay out of drama and the media or yet still not as popular. However you’re talented ass fuck and one day you wake up and you find out you’re nominated and got a notice from one of the biggest award shows purely cause of your TALENT!”

Much of the conversation around the award ceremony has been dominated by The Weeknd’s decision for a full-blown boycott of the music awards all together, after a perceived snub of his hit record After Hours by the Recording Academy. In a statement, The Weeknd vowed to boycott the annual awards ceremony going forward after he was left out of the nominations list for his album After Hours. The artist has dominated at every other awards show since the release of that record last year.
