Andre 3000 Labeled “Overrated” by Podcast Personality Jamil “Mal” Clay

Andre 3000 has long been celebrated as a hip-hop legend, but Jamil “Mal” Clay recently challenged that perception. On a recent episode of the New Rory & Mal podcast, Clay called Andre 3000 the most overrated rapper. His reasoning centers on the Outkast star’s lack of solo rap projects.

“The most overrated rapper to me,” Mal said, “Andre 3000. Only because he’s never put out a solo rap project, and he gets GOAT status. You have to have a solo rap album.” Rory pushed back, pointing to Andre’s iconic verses, but Mal maintained his position.

Mal explained, “I fell victim at one point to having 3000 in my top five rappers of all time. And I had to really think about it. I’m like, that’s not fair to somebody whose entire career is a solo career, and they’ve put out amazing albums, amazing bars, and they don’t get that slot. Whereas 3000 gets it, but we never got a solo rap project from him?”

He clarified that his comments were not meant to diminish Andre’s talent. “That doesn’t mean that Andre 3000 is not a great rapper and a great MC,” he said. “I’m just saying that, me personally, I can’t have him in my top five.”

Andre 3000 continues to receive recognition for his work with Outkast. In November, the duo was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. At the ceremony, the 50-year-old rapper reflected on his journey. “Jack [White] said something about little rooms. We started in a little room. Great things start in little rooms,” he said. Andre also acknowledged the support of Rico Wade and others who helped the duo reach their level of success.

While debate over Andre 3000’s ranking in hip-hop continues, his influence and contributions remain undeniable. Even without solo rap albums, his work with Outkast has left a lasting impact on the genre, earning him critical acclaim and a place in music history.
