Each finalist received $15,000 for submitting a 30-second to one-minute preview of their creative treatment. According to the website, the competition aimed to highlight new and emerging directors, including several first-time filmmakers. The finalists demonstrate a wide range of styles and storytelling approaches.
Some of the most notable submissions include Jordan Sook’s playful use of puppets representing Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR, partying with women and even taking a ride on Drake’s private plane, Air Drake. Edgar Daniel’s concept centers on a casting call where women audition for cameos in the music video, creating a lighthearted behind-the-scenes feel. Kristen Lambie took a more emotional approach, focusing on an older man revisiting locations tied to memories of past love. Her visual emphasizes reflection and nostalgia, with the description noting, “With every step, memories ignite – his younger self bursting to life, reliving the sweet innocence, joy and tenderness of first love. Past and present collide in a beautiful dance, celebrating the timeless power of black love, memory and devotion.”
The contest not only showcases the finalists’ creativity but also highlights Drake and Kai Cenat’s commitment to supporting rising talent in the directorial space.
