Cardi B Gears Up to Drop ‘Imaginary Players’ as Fans Speculate Jay-Z Sample and Nicki Minaj Tensions Rise

Cardi B is preparing to release her next single, Imaginary Players, from her upcoming sophomore album Am I The Drama?. The track is set to arrive on August 15, following months of anticipation surrounding the project. Cardi teased the song on Instagram by sharing what appears to be its cover art, immediately sparking online debate.
The title choice caught attention because it matches the name of a 1997 Jay-Z track from his second album In My Lifetime, Vol. 1. In Jay-Z’s version, the rapper delivers sharp boasts aimed at then-rival Ma$e. Fans are now speculating that Cardi’s single could sample the original or adopt a similar lyrical approach by targeting competitors in her lane.
Speaking on Instagram Live, Cardi hinted at the track’s tone without confirming the sample rumors. “It’s one of my favorite songs on the album,” she said. “I fought really hard to put this song out because some people wanted a different direction, but I wanted more of a hip-hop direction. This single is really how I talk all day, every day, but in a song. It’s real flex st, real calm flex st.”
The possibility of a Jay-Z sample has fueled discussion among fans of both Cardi and Nicki Minaj. Given the longstanding rivalry between the two artists, some Nicki supporters have already voiced criticism online. Comments from Instagram users accused Cardi of intentionally provoking Nicki, with one writing, “She really be doing things on purpose to piss Nicki off,” and another adding, “She rlly wanna be Nicki, the obsession.” Others have speculated that Cardi might be positioning herself for a Roc Nation deal, pointing to her past dissatisfaction with Atlantic Records.
Imaginary Players will mark Cardi’s latest release ahead of Am I The Drama?, which arrives later this year. With speculation over a Jay-Z connection and the added tension surrounding her feud with Nicki Minaj, the single’s release is expected to generate significant attention when it drops this Friday.
