Young Guru misses the times when the game was different

Young Guru posted a young throwback from the early 2000’s talking about how he misses how the game was back then. he further describes what was in the picture and speaks about a move Loreal taught him.

In the early 1990s Young Guru bought his own amplifiers, lights and microphones which sparked his interest in music technology. While a student at Howard University, he saw the early development of Bad Boy Records and landed some of his early engineering jobs. He began DJing in Washington DC in 1996, where he met singer/rapper Nonchalant, who had a top 20 single at the time, and became her tour DJ. Young Guru, who had taken piano lessons as a child, used the money he received from the tour to fund a six-month music recording course at Omega Recording Studios in Rockville, Maryland, which had a great impact on him. After Omega, Young Guru engineered Nonchalant’s second album, which was never released, but the producer, Chucky Thompson (Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans) recognized the young engineer’s potential and invited him to come and work with him in Washington DC. In 1999, Young Guru went independent and moved to New York, where he worked with Deric “D-Dot” Angelettie on his Madd Rapper project and with Memphis Bleek. The latter was signed to Roc-A-Fella Records, which led to Young Guru meeting Jay-Z.

It is clear that he has had his own equipment since the early 90’s and had been working on his music in the studio for more than a decade. It was easier back then to make your own music or be more involved in the technical musical stuff, he misses how less complicated it was then.

he then took to instagram saying:

“Quad around 2002!! The game was so different then. That rack behind me was all my equipment and you used to get over by changing a rental fee to the label on top of your mixing fee. @loreallemond taught me that move lol. And it just so happens that @stuartwhitemix (B’s engineer) was my assistant for this session. State Property clothes was my S*** back then and @beaniesigelsp alway had a fresh box for me. I miss these days”
