John Legend Responds to Kanye West’s “Mashed Potatoes” Comment and Reflects on Their Past Collaboration

John Legend has addressed a recent viral comment made by Kanye West during an interview with DJ Akademiks, where Ye jokingly said that Legend “smells like mashed potatoes.” The unexpected remark quickly made waves online, prompting Legend to share his thoughts during an appearance on Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning.

“He was very obsessed with the sweaters, and he said I smell like mashed potatoes,” Legend said when asked about West’s comment. Keeping the mood light, he added, “What kind of potatoes? Cheesy, garlic? … All of it makes me sad, though. All of it does. And it’s not for me because obviously, I smell great.”

While Legend laughed off the surface-level jab, he also took the opportunity to reflect more seriously on his relationship with Kanye and the artistic history they share. He described the earlier years of West’s career as a time filled with “energy, creativity, and optimism.”

“Being a part of that was inspiring,” Legend continued. “It was truly inspiring. That’s why it’s sad now. We did amazing things together as a collective, as a movement. … To be part of that was amazing. I have no regrets. Even though he’s gone, like, completely left now, I’m so glad that we did what we did together.”

Legend and West have worked together on several memorable tracks over the years, including the emotional My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy standout “Blame Game” in 2010, as well as songs like “Number One” and “It’s Over.” Their collaborations helped shape pivotal moments in both of their careers.

Following his comments about West, Legend also turned attention toward his upcoming musical ventures. Fans will soon hear him featured on Clipse’s new album Let God Sort Em Out, appearing on the track “The Birds Don’t Sing.” The song was first previewed during the Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer Men’s Collection show in 2024, generating buzz for its emotional tone and lyrical depth.

Clipse’s long-awaited reunion album, scheduled for release on July 11, features an impressive lineup of guest artists. In addition to John Legend, the project includes appearances from Voices of Fire, Kendrick Lamar, Tyler, the Creator, The-Dream, Pharrell Williams, Stove God Cooks, Ab-Liva, and Nas. Pharrell, who’s been a key producer in Clipse’s career, is handling production for the entire album.

For Legend, this latest feature continues a busy stretch of collaborations and solo work, showing that even as he reflects on complicated past relationships, his focus remains on making meaningful music.
